The purpose of the document is to provide instructions on how to create an API key in Mailchimp, find the List ID, and update the client configuration for integration purposes.
It contains detailed steps for each part of the process, including securing the API key and locating the server location.
Mailchimp integration is opt-in as it requires some configuration before being used, as detailed below.
This Mailchimp integration uses the Segments functionality in Membrs and adds them as Tags against the matching contact in Mailchimp.
For example, if you have a field for members interested in golf, you then create a segment using the advanced search to only display those members who have that ticked. By saving this as a segment this is then synchronised with Mailchimp as a tag with the name of the segment as the tag name.
NOTE: Once configured, all Segments will be synced to Mailchimp as Tags against respective members. Some of these Tags may not be relevant in Mailchimp, however, as this is subjective, Memb.rs and Mailchimp don't know which Segments/Tags are useful in Mailchimp all Segments are synced. Unrequired Tags against a member can just be ignored.
Members Synchronisation
If a member is created in Memb.rs, and are set as Active on the Summary page, then they are created as a contact in Mailchimp and their data (name, email address, segments/tags) are synchronised with Mailchimp.
NOTE: Only members with valid email addresses can be synced to Mailchimp.
Please follow this guide on how to export member data from Memb.rs and import to Mailchimp.
Once a contact is in Mailchimp then the following is synchronised when a member record is updated:
Segments from Memb.rs (as tags in Mailchimp)
- Any fields that you imported and matched against the field options in Mailchimp.
- Only the fields that, when you imported the data, you chose to match those that Mailchimp offered.
- For example, you imported First Name and Last Name columns, and in the import options you chose those columns to match First Name and Last Name in the options Mailchimp offered.
- If you create a new custom field in Mailchimp (for example Title or Postnominals) then these are not synchronised.
Manual Segment Synchronisation
Once Mailchimp integration is completed then the Manage Segments section will show options for either synchronising individual Segments, or synchronising all Segments together.
Create an API Key
Login to Mailchimp and go to the API section.
This API key is viewable only once so must be recorded somewhere safe.
Click Create Key.
Name the key. Be descriptive, so that it is clear what its usage is, eg Memb.rs Sync.
Keep in mind that you’ll see only this name and the first 4 key digits on your list of API keys.
Click Generate Key.
Click Copy Key to Clipboard.
IMPORTANT: Save the key somewhere secure, you won’t be able to see or copy it again.
If you lose this key, you’ll need to generate a new key and update any integration that uses it.
Click Done.
Find The List ID
Go to the lists section in Mailchimp.
On the audience that should be updated by Memb.rs use the dropdown menu option on the right of it and select Settings.
Find the Audience ID.
Copy this alphanumeric value.
IMPORTANT: Share the API key and List ID with us via a secure method so that it can be added to your client configuration file.
