What are Google Pay and Apple Pay?
Google Pay and Apple Pay are digital wallet services that allow users to make secure payments using cards they've already saved to their Google or Apple account. Instead of manually entering card details, users can complete payments with a fingerprint, Face ID, or PIN.
Availability
Google Pay and Apple Pay buttons will automatically appear on booking, order and donation forms when:
- The user's browser and device support the payment method
- The user has Google Pay or Apple Pay set up on their device
- The website is accessed over a secure HTTPS connection
- Your organisation has enabled Stripe payments
Note: Not all users will see these options - it depends on their device and browser.
Benefits of Using Google Pay or Apple Pay
- Faster checkout - No need to type card details
- More secure - Biometric authentication and tokenised payments
- Convenient - Use cards already saved to your account
- Familiar - Uses the same interface you use for other purchases
- Error-free - No risk of typing card numbers incorrectly
How to Use Google Pay or Apple Pay
Google Pay and Apple Pay work the same way across all payment forms (bookings, donations, orders, etc.):
- Navigate to the form where you want to make a payment (e.g., event booking, donation page, shop order)
- Fill in any required details in the form
- In the payment section, if available, you'll see a Google Pay or Apple Pay button
- Click the Google Pay or Apple Pay button
- A payment screen will open showing your saved cards
- Select your card and authorise using your fingerprint, Face ID, or PIN
- The payment screen will close and you'll return to the form
- You'll see a confirmation message: "Google Pay ready. Click the button below to complete your payment" (or "Apple Pay ready")
- Complete any remaining form fields (e.g., add guests, dietary requirements, delivery details, Gift Aid information)
- Click the submit button at the bottom of the form (e.g., "Complete Booking", "Complete Donation", "Place Order")
- Your payment will be processed and you'll receive a confirmation email as normal
Important Things to Know
When is Payment Taken?
Payment is NOT taken when you authorise Google Pay or Apple Pay.
The authorisation step simply confirms you have a valid payment method. The actual payment is only processed when you click the final "Complete Booking" or "Complete Donation" button.
This allows you to:
- Review all booking details before paying
- Add guests and their information
- Make changes to your booking
- Cancel without being charged if you change your mind
Switching Payment Methods
You can change your mind after authorising Google Pay or Apple Pay:
- Select a different payment method from the dropdown (e.g., "Saved Card" or "New Card")
- Your Google Pay or Apple Pay authorisation will be cancelled
- Complete the form with your chosen payment method
Security
Google Pay and Apple Pay are highly secure:
- Your actual card number is never shared with the website
- Each transaction uses a unique encrypted token
- You must authenticate with fingerprint, Face ID, or PIN
- Your card details remain stored securely with Google or Apple
Browser and Device Requirements
Google Pay works on:
- Chrome browser on Android devices
- Chrome browser on desktop computers (if Google Pay is set up)
Apple Pay works on:
- Safari browser on iPhone, iPad, or Mac
- Devices with Touch ID or Face ID
Both require:
- A secure HTTPS connection
- Cards already saved to your Google or Apple account
Troubleshooting
I don't see the Google Pay or Apple Pay button
This could be because:
- Your device or browser doesn't support it
- You haven't set up Google Pay or Apple Pay on your device
- You're using an unsupported browser (try Chrome for Google Pay, Safari for Apple Pay)
- The website isn't using a secure connection
Solution: Use the standard "New Card" payment option instead.
The payment sheet won't open
- Make sure you have cards saved in your Google or Apple account
- Check your device has biometric authentication enabled
- Try refreshing the page and starting again
I authorised payment but want to cancel
- Simply close the browser tab or navigate away from the page
- No payment will be taken until you click "Complete Booking" or "Complete Donation"
- If you've already completed the booking, contact the organisation to request a cancellation
Payment failed after I clicked Complete
- Check your card has sufficient funds
- Verify your card hasn't expired
- Try authorising again with a different card
- Contact your bank if the issue persists
- Use the standard "New Card" option as an alternative
I was charged twice
This shouldn't happen, but if you believe you've been charged twice:
- Check your bank statement - you may see a pending authorisation that will drop off
- Contact the organisation's administrator with your booking reference
- Authorisation holds typically disappear within 24-48 hours
